Congratulations to Dr. Kathy Van Valkenburg and her daughter Brooke for being named among this year's Unite For Sight "Fundraisers of the Year". Kayla and I were on placement with the Van Valkenburgs in Ghana this past summer and we can attest to the fact that 100% of the funds they raised have gone to providing eye care to those who need it the most. Great job to the Van Valkenburg family!

Photography for Global Health Advocacy
In other global health related news, my photo recently won 2nd place in the “Critical Global Issues” category at the 2012 Queen’s University International Centre Photo Contest. It was taken while on clinical outreach in the town of Suhum in Ghana’s Eastern Region during my Unite For Sight placement. In the background, a colorful crowd of community members can be seen patiently waiting to see the ophthalmologist—literally united for sight.
A gala exhibition/awards ceremony was held for the winning photos and it provided me with the perfect opportunity to discuss issues of global health and the Unite For Sight program with those in attendance.

Check out this amazing timeline charting the surgical growth of Unite For Sight Ghanaian partner Crystal Eye Clinic. I had the privilege of volunteering with Ghanaian ophthalmologist Dr. James Clarke and the staff of Crystal Eye Clinic this past summer and observed just a few of the 2,954 sight-restoring surgeries performed by the clinic in 2011. This number represents a 27% increase in village patients provided care since 2010! Congratulations to Unite For Sight and the Crystal Eye Clinic outreach team for not only providing sight, but also tangible results!
